BBS (Bulletin Board System)
A BBS is an electronic version of a bulletin board on which
users can post or read messages, or even download public domain
software. To make the connection work, the user must have a PC
running communications software, a modem and a phone line. On
the receiving (or the BBS administrator's) end, you'll typically
find a PC, a bank of modems, several phone lines, and BBS
communications software. BBS administrators are often called
sysops (systems operators). BBS systems were used by many
organizations before on-line services such as the Internet,
CompuServe, America OnLine and Prodigy became popular. Now
many organizations use those on-line services to host their
BBS activities.
